Information about Old Oak Common
Old Oak Common is an area of London best known for its railway depots. The trains which operate the Heathrow Express and Heathrow Connect services are maintained at a depot north of the Great Western Main Line, while south of the line is North Pole Depot where the Eurostar trains which operate on Channel Tunnel routes have their UK base. The site is also the ancestral home of the Great Western Railway's primary London depot.
The area is also the location where two GWR main lines bifurcate: the 1838 route to Reading via Slough, and the 1906 New North Main Line via Greenford to Northolt Junction, the start of the Great Western and Great Central Joint Line. Only the former is in use for regular passenger service, with the latter being used by freight trains, diversionary workings, and ECS movements. Further south is an open area Wormwood Scrubs Park and the well known prison.
